Germany’s national football team coach, Julian Nagelsmann, recently announced the squad for the upcoming 2024 Euros, opting for a largely unchanged lineup despite late claims from Borussia Dortmund players Mats Hummels and Julian Brandt.
While Hummels and Brandt have been instrumental in Dortmund’s journey to the Champions League final, Nagelsmann decided to stick with the team that secured impressive victories against France and the Netherlands in March.
Notably, Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka was omitted from the squad, along with his teammate Serge Gnabry, who is sidelined due to injury.
Despite Germany’s recent struggles, including poor performances in 2023 under former coach Hansi Flick, Nagelsmann’s revamped squad showed promise with wins over strong opponents like France and the Dutch.
Nagelsmann made some adjustments to the squad, bringing in players like Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck and Stuttgart goalkeeper Alex Nuebel while omitting others like Heidenheim’s Jan-Niklas Beste and the injured Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
Additionally, Bayern’s Leroy Sane, who missed the March friendlies due to injury, has been added to the squad.
The announcement also confirmed the inclusion of veterans from Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning team, including goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, forward Thomas Mueller, and midfielder Toni Kroos. Barcelona midfielder Ilkay Gundogan will continue as captain, as previously confirmed by Nagelsmann.
The German Football Association (DFB) had already revealed 18 members of the squad through various sources, reducing speculation over the final lineup.
The Euros are set to commence on June 14, with Germany facing Scotland in Munich.
Ahead of the tournament, Germany will embark on a pre-Euros training camp in the village of Blankenhai, coinciding with England’s base during the event. Notably, four squad members involved in the Champions League final will.
