Ghanaian chef Ebenezer Smith has been detained on allegations of fraud, just hours after a triumphant press conference at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra, where he announced that he had achieved a new Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual. Smith claimed to have cooked continuously for an impressive 820 hours from February 1 to March 6, 2024.
At the press conference held on July 2, Chef Smith declared, “Today is the day that I will forever remember. I am incredibly humbled and honoured to stand before you today as the Guinness World Record holder.”
The inscription on his displayed Guinness World Record certificate read: “The longest cooking marathon (individual) is 802 hours 25 minutes and was achieved by Ebenezer Smith (Ghanaian) in Spintex, Accra, Ghana, from 1 February to 6 March, 2024.” If verified, Smith would surpass the current record held by Irishman Alan Fisher, who cooked for 119 hours and 57 minutes.

However, shortly after the celebration, reports surfaced that Smith had been arrested for allegedly defrauding one of his sponsors, Amadia Shopping Mall, during his cooking marathon. Smith’s sister, Ayram, and his lawyer, Kofi Awoonor, confirmed his arrest to 3news’ Job Laboja.
