Godfrey Okoye University in Enugu has announced that traditional whiteboards will no longer be used in the Computer Science department starting in September. This decision was revealed by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Christian Anieke, during a recent address to Computer Science students.
Prof. Anieke stated that the department will transition to using only smart boards and projectors for all academic activities. He emphasized the importance of embracing modern teaching tools and urged students and lecturers who might struggle with this shift to consider changing their course.
Highlighting the need for graduates who are job creators rather than job seekers, Anieke said, “I wonder why a computer science graduate should be looking for paid employment. This is why the department should train graduates to be job creators and solve societal problems. “To encourage innovation, Prof. Anieke pledged a prize of N1 million to any student who can design a solution-oriented innovation. He stressed that the awards are aimed at students who can develop practical solutions to real-world issues.
The Vice-Chancellor also challenged students to create computer programs capable of eliminating the need for thumbprints and determining the number of people in specific areas within the university at any given time. He emphasized the need for students to prepare for more intensive and innovative academic activities.
Anieke also advised students to avoid criminal activities and focus on using their skills to create wealth. Additionally, he announced a new requirement for Computer Science students to gain practical experience by attaching themselves to organizations during long vacations, similar to the practice followed by law students at the university.
With these changes, Godfrey Okoye University aims to modernize its Computer Science department, fostering a new generation of graduates who are well-equipped to meet the challenges of the digital age and contribute positively to society.
