The Nigerian government has once again reached out to the youth, urging them to reconsider their planned protests, asserting that such demonstrations may lead to adverse outcomes.
At a press conference held on Wednesday, George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, acknowledged the difficulties Nigerians are currently facing due to certain governmental policies. He emphasized, however, that these policies are crucial for the nation’s long-term prosperity.
“Achieving economic prosperity is a fundamental aim of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, as it serves as the driving force for progress, elevates families from poverty, and fosters robust, resilient communities,” Mr. Akume stated. “To realize this vision, we must prioritize peace and stability, which are essential for cultivating trust, cooperation, and a unified purpose.”
He further asserted that protests would not provide solutions to the country’s issues, encouraging the youth to engage in dialogue and practice patience with the administration.
“Nigeria is evolving, and in time we will experience relief. The current economic difficulties will soon lessen, allowing us all to partake in lasting prosperity,” he expressed.
The Secretary appealed to all Nigerians, regardless of their beliefs, demographics, gender, or social status, to reject the call for protests and instead focus on fostering peace and progress.
Several cabinet members present at the briefing, including Minister of Information Mohammed Idris, Minister of Solid Minerals and Development Dele Alake, and Minister of Budget and Economic Planning Atiku Bagudu, supported Mr. Akume’s message.
### Planned Demonstrations
Young Nigerians are gearing up for a 10-day nationwide protest aimed at demanding improvements in the nation’s economic conditions, particularly calling for a rollback of the recently removed petrol subsidies. These protests are set to commence on Thursday.
Despite President Tinubu’s continuous calls for the youth to abandon their plans, the demonstrators have dismissed the administration’s appeals. Mobilizing through social media platforms, the youth have expressed their determination to move forward with their protests as scheduled.
