Taraba State Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas has strongly condemned the violent killing of Alhaji Tanimu Kunbiya, the Gara of Chanchagi, and his son Yusuf Kunbiya. The tragic incident occurred on Friday evening in Takum Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement released by Mr. Emmanuel Bello, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communications, Governor Kefas labeled the murder as brutal and inhumane. He has called on the security forces to act swiftly to identify and capture those responsible for this terrible crime. The Governor assured the public that he is determined to ensure that justice is served and emphasized the need for calm as security agencies carry out their investigation.
Governor Kefas expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the Gara of Chanchagi and his son, highlighting the shocking nature of the murder. The two were attacked while returning from a funeral in Takum. Governor Kefas has instructed security agents to start a thorough investigation immediately and to pursue the criminals until they are brought to justice.
The Governor reassured residents of Takum that he is committed to eradicating all forms of crime and lawlessness from the state. He emphasized that with the strong security measures his administration is implementing, the era of banditry and criminal activities will come to an end. He urged the community to remain patient and support the security forces in their efforts to restore peace.
Additionally, the Tiv Cultural and Social Association (TCSA) in Taraba State has urged the state government and security agencies to conduct a meticulous investigation into the murder of the monarch and his son. Mr. James Baka, the President General of TCSA, voiced the Tiv people’s deep sadness and condemnation of the violence. He stressed their commitment to peace and unity and called for calm while the authorities work on the case.
Mr. Baka asked Governor Kefas to deploy additional security forces to help manage the escalating tensions in the area. He highlighted the longstanding peaceful coexistence between the Tiv people and the Chamba and Jukun communities in Takum. The recent violence is seen as an unprecedented threat to this harmony, and Baka reaffirmed their dedication to maintaining peace and opposing any form of violence.
It is reported that the Gara and his son were killed on the Takum-Wukari road while returning from a neighboring local government area. The murder has heightened tensions in Takum, particularly following recent changes to the traditional leadership structure, which has been a source of local controversy.
Despite the unrest, heavy security presence and ongoing peace initiatives have helped to maintain a level of stability in Takum, which is also home to General TY Danjuma, a former Minister of Defence.
