On Tuesday, Governor Bala Mohammed expressed deep concern over the escalating violence in Bauchi, acknowledging the significant hardships faced by the populace.
“Protests are a fundamental right in a democracy; the people have the right to express their anger,” he stated, voicing his discontent regarding the violent incidents that unfolded during the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations in Azare, the administrative center of the Katagum local government area.
The governor made these remarks while speaking to reporters following an urgent security council meeting at the state government house. He emphasized that his administration does not endorse violent protests and would not hesitate to distance itself from such actions.
“We stand with the youth of Bauchi state; however, we do not support those who seek to incite chaos, violence, and harm to lives and property,” Mr. Mohammed declared.
Highlighting the prevailing hardships, he reiterated the need for leaders at all levels to listen and adjust federal, state, and local government policies to better serve the people.
Regarding the curfew implemented in Azare, the governor explained, “This measure is necessary to protect innocent citizens, the government, and the community at large. We cannot permit the deterioration of law and order to escalate beyond what we have witnessed today in Bauchi.”
Commending the security forces for their response to the unrest, he called for collective efforts to prevent a recurrence of the violence experienced in Azare and various parts of the Bauchi metropolis.
“We assure the people of Bauchi that their safety is our priority, and we will promote a culture of persuasion while ensuring that security agencies adhere to established rules of engagement. This approach will mitigate any arbitrary actions and ensure that we remain firm in protecting lives and property,” the governor assured.
