Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has expressed his strong disapproval regarding the alarming incidents of piracy affecting boat operators and sea travelers across the state’s waterways. He declared that his administration will not tolerate such criminal activities any longer.
During a meeting with representatives from the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) at Government House in Port Harcourt, the Governor reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents, whether locals or visitors, enabling them to engage in their daily activities without fear of harassment.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, Governor Fubara responded to the concerns raised by the union members regarding their security and called for immediate action from the government.
Dr. George Nwaeke, head of the Rivers State Civil Service, represented Governor Fubara and praised the union for fulfilling their civic duty by reporting criminal activities in their areas of operation.
The Governor emphasized the importance of effective policing throughout the state, revealing that the Rivers State Government prioritizes the safety and security of its citizens. He stated, “The protection of lives and property is a fundamental focus of this administration, and I am determined to uphold this commitment.”
He elaborated, “Community policing isn’t merely about forming local police groups; rather, every individual is a part of the policing effort. If you see something suspicious, it’s your duty to report it.”
Governor Fubara reassured the union members that their actions should not be seen as protests, but rather as a demonstration of civic responsibility for reporting observed misconduct. He pledged that his administration would leave no stone unturned in ensuring the security of all individuals within the state.
Addressing the pirate attacks, the Governor acknowledged the concerns raised and insisted that the perpetrators of such crimes are known to the community. He urged residents to be brave and report information about these criminals to the authorities.
He stated, “If you’re hesitant to report due to safety concerns, remember that your cooperation is vital for the security agencies. This government does not tolerate criminality among us.”
Governor Fubara concluded by assuring that his administration is actively working towards improving governance and infrastructure, aiming to enhance service delivery for all residents. He expressed optimism that with time, Rivers State would become a premier destination for tourism and other activities.
