Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has asserted that Nigerians are opposed to a one-party political system, emphasizing the need for alternatives to hold underperforming leaders accountable.

During a visit from the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which came to express condolences for the tragic loss of 35 children in a recent stampede and to introduce the party’s new National Secretary, Sunday Udeh-Okoye, Makinde made his views clear.

He stated, “Nigerians do not support a single-party state. They seek options and the authority to hold leaders accountable when they fail to fulfill their commitments. This principle is essential for the vitality of our democracy.”

In light of the unfortunate stampede, Makinde expressed gratitude to the NWC for their support and announced his decision to forgo his birthday celebration in honor of the victims. He also stressed the importance of unity within the PDP and the necessity of adhering to the rule of law, particularly regarding a recent court ruling related to the party’s National Secretary position.

“The new National Secretary has been appointed following a court ruling, and I firmly believe we must respect the rule of law,” he remarked.

Looking ahead to 2025, Makinde identified it as a critical year for the PDP, as the party gears up for another convention. He conveyed optimism about the party’s cohesion, stating, “The NWC is united, and there are no factions within the party. This unity provides us with a solid foundation for the future.”
