Governor Godwin Obaseki’s announcement of the upcoming implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in governance in Edo State marks a significant advancement in the modernization of governmental processes.

The integration of AI technologies holds immense potential to enhance efficiency, transparency, and citizen engagement within the state’s administration.

The utilization of AI in governance can revolutionize decision-making processes by harnessing data analytics to derive valuable insights. Through machine learning algorithms, governments can analyze vast amounts of data to identify patterns, predict trends, and make informed policy decisions.

This data-driven approach can optimize resource allocation, improve service delivery, and streamline bureaucratic procedures.

The utilization of AI technologies within government systems has the potential to revolutionize decision-making processes, enhance efficiency, and improve service delivery to the state’s residents.

By incorporating AI into governance practices, Edo State can leverage machine learning algorithms to analyze vast amounts of data, identify patterns, and generate actionable insights to inform policy-making and resource allocation.

This predictive analytics capability can help officials anticipate and address complex challenges more effectively, leading to more informed and proactive decision-making.

“Yes, you will use AI and you will have AI.”

The governor who used the occasion to reel out his achievements in the last seven and half years, noted that the welfare of workers and every citizens in Edo has been the basis for every decisions and actions he took.

The state government recently revealed that they have successfully implemented a strategic initiative to enhance their workforce by hiring approximately 5,000 new employees. This significant increase in staff members is aimed at addressing various challenges faced by the state and boosting efficiency in service delivery to citizens. By expanding the workforce, the government has signaled its commitment to meeting the growing demands and ensuring the smooth operation of key public services.

This move reflects the government’s proactive approach to human resource management, demonstrating a focus on capacity building and organizational development. The infusion of fresh talent and skills into the workforce is expected to bring new perspectives and ideas, thereby fostering innovation and productivity within the government system.

“I have always been conscious of that responsibility which God has place on me and in spite of the hostilities and vendetta by some politicians, I have done everything in my power and human ability to ensure that I do not stray from that ideological part for the use of the public resources for the good of our citizens.

The remarkable transformation of a state that once held the unenviable position of being the highest in human trafficking and irregular migration in Nigeria to now having the lowest number of multidimensional poor people in the country.

Through strategic interventions and targeted policies, this state has not only tackled the scourge of human trafficking but has also made significant strides in alleviating poverty and improving the well-being of its citizens.

As we celebrate the remarkable progress in healthcare and education indicators, it is essential to acknowledge the collective efforts of government agencies, healthcare providers, educators, community leaders, and civil society organizations. Moving forward, sustaining these achievements will require continued investment, innovation, and collaboration to address emerging challenges and build a better future for all residents of our state.

By sharing our experiences and best practices, we can inspire other regions in Nigeria and beyond to replicate our success in achieving low infant and maternal mortality rates and eliminating barriers to education. Together, we can create a more equitable and inclusive society where every individual has the opportunity to thrive and realize their aspirations.

“One of the things I promised in 2016 was that I was going to build our institutions for governance and today we can proudly say that workers to achieve the modest institutional reforms which we have now achieved in Edo state.

“Today, we can celebrate and that with your support we have been able to recruit over 5,000 new workers into the Edo civil service based on merit and no longer on favouritism as it used to be. Now you don’t need to know anybody to get work in government in Edo state. You just need to know something.

“I have been amazed by how workers in Edo State embrace and adopted technology and how they have continue to use applications to do the ways we do things in government, whether they are teachers using technology in EdoBest or workers using platform in the secretariat or whether they are our health workers using e-health technology in our different primary healthcare. You have all done very well,” Obaseki said.

He continued: “Two days ago, I announced that we have raised the minimum wage in Edo state from N40,000 monthly to N70,000 monthly, an increased of over 75 per cent. This is because we know and feel the hardship which most of you experience daily.

The confluence of fuel subsidy removal, exchange rate fluctuations, and food price hikes has created a perfect storm of economic challenges for individuals and families. The road ahead is fraught with uncertainties, but by understanding the intricate dynamics at play and implementing targeted interventions, we can forge a path towards a more sustainable and equitable future for all.

“We are empathetic government, we cannot say we do not know and if we know, we can sit down and do nothing about it. That is one reasons that we said even though it will be a strain on us we should do what is expected by increasing the minimum wage.

“The N70,000 minimum wage is within what we can afford as a state government. However, should the federal government decide on a higher minimum wage, and decide to make the funds available to states, the savings which they have made from the removal of fuel subsidy, Edo State government will adjust its minimum wage to that of the federal government.
