Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has voiced his belief that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will successfully reclaim its mandate, which he claims was unlawfully taken by the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the governorship election on September 21.
Obaseki made these remarks during the inauguration of a caretaker committee appointed by the PDP’s National Working Committee to manage the party’s affairs until new leadership is elected. Dr. Tony Aziegbemi is set to chair the committee, with Hon. Henry Duke Tenebe acting as Secretary. The committee also includes members such as Harrison Omagbon, Fidel Igenegbale, Chris Nehikhare, Tony Anenih Jnr, Archbishop Anthony Okosun, Segun Saiki, Adezat Ibrahim, and Augustine Edosomwan.
While addressing party leaders, local government chairpersons, chieftains, and stakeholders, Governor Obaseki called for unity and solidarity as the party navigates the legal avenues to reclaim its mandate.
He stated, “We must unite and remain resolute in our pursuit of justice and in preparing for what lies ahead. We aim for a unified party as we advocate for our stolen mandate, and I am confident we will recover it. Our mandate was taken right before our eyes; everyone witnessed the theft.”
Obaseki insisted that the evidence of the alleged theft is compelling and expressed faith in the legal process to rectify the situation. “They may think they can get away with this, but we are governed by laws and there are formal procedures to address these issues. They are attempting to inaugurate a new government without proper invitation to the actual governor, as if initiating a completely new state.”
He lamented the atmosphere of illegality, urging patience as the democratic process unfolds. “We are aware of how our mandate was taken, and we have the proof. Our supporters turned out to vote for our party, and we are contesting that result with confidence in our eventual victory.”
Obaseki emphasized the critical need for party cohesion, stating, “Now is the time for harmony within the party, and we must maintain communication with our local government leaders weekly. It’s vital that we keep our constituents informed.”
He cautioned that during the holiday season, the opposition may attempt to sway public opinion with financial tactics. “They have substantial funds available for projects, but they are diverting money to finance their inauguration, which could cost between N2 billion to N5 billion. This money will initially come from the treasury.”
The governor reassured party members of his unwavering commitment, stating he would continue to provide guidance within the PDP. “We will reclaim our stolen mandate for the sake of Nigeria. Allowing the APC to retain it would signify a grave threat to our democracy. This struggle transcends individual candidates; it is a fight for the people of Nigeria and the integrity of our democratic system.”
