Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has firmly denied any connection to the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Gboyega Akosile, Sanwo-Olu rejected allegations implying that he played a role in Obasa’s ousting, asserting that the issue was strictly a legislative affair.

“There is completely no basis to the speculation that the governor had any influence over the impeachment. This was solely a decision taken by the lawmakers,” Akosile Stated.

He further emphasized, “Governor Sanwo-Olu remains dedicated to addressing the needs of more than 20 million residents of Lagos. The events that unfolded in the Assembly were entirely within the legislative authority. Like the general public, the governor followed the proceedings through the media.”

Obasa who had represented the Agege 1 Constituency and held the position of Speaker since 2015, was removed during an emergency plenary session on Monday. A total of thirty-two out of forty members voted in favour of his removal, citing allegations of gross misconduct.

Following this, Deputy Speaker Mrs Mojisola Meranda (APC-Apapa 1) was swiftly sworn in as the new Speaker, while Mr Fatai Adebola (APC-Ibeju Lekki 1) was elected to serve as Deputy Speaker.

Additionally, the Assembly took the step of suspending its Clerk, Mr. Olalekan Onafeko, indefinitely, and proceeded to dissolve all principal positions and standing committees.
