Afrobeats singer and producer, Maleek Berry, recently opened up about his early experiences with fellow artist Davido, sharing an unexpected revelation from their days as up-and-coming musicians.
During an appearance on the ’90s Baby’ podcast, the ‘Kontrol’ hitmaker recalled how Davido, despite his affluent background, acted like he was just another struggling artist while they worked together in a London studio.
“I was there when Davido only had four thousand YouTube views. When he came to London, I would take him to the studio in Bermondsey and record him,” Maleek Berry shared, adding that they connected through one of Davido’s cousins on social media.
At the time, Davido wasn’t well-known, and the two bonded over their shared passion for music. Berry was under the impression that Davido was just like them—grinding and hustling his way up.
“He acted around us like one of those poor kids,” Berry recounted. But his perception changed when he visited Davido’s father’s mansion. “When I pulled up to his dad’s crib, I was surprised. There’s money and there’s money!”

He added, “I was just so taken aback because at the time, my mind didn’t used to move like he [Davido] had money. He used to blend in with us. When I saw the tower, I was like, okay, they’re rich.”
Maleek Berry also credited Davido with connecting him to another Nigerian superstar, Wizkid, in later years. This early friendship and collaboration with Davido played a significant role in shaping Berry’s journey in the Afrobeats scene.
