Reliance Health has partnered with Platos Health to implement a pilot study focusing on the use of technology to manage chronic diseases. This collaboration aims to enhance the quality of life for Nigerians living with diabetes while also reducing healthcare costs.

Reliance Health, a health tech company, is dedicated to making healthcare accessible and affordable through innovative solutions like health insurance plans and telemedicine services. This pilot study specifically evaluated the effectiveness of Platos, a virtual platform designed for managing chronic health conditions, among Reliance HMO enrollees.

The results from the pilot study reveal encouraging improvements in diabetes management, signaling a promising future for healthcare in Nigeria. Among the key outcomes observed were:

1. Improvement in Blood Sugar Control: Participants in the program showed an average reduction of about 12% in their fasting blood sugar levels over a 12-week period. This is a critical improvement for effective diabetes management.

2. Reduced Insulin Dependency: Participants required significantly less insulin to manage their blood sugar, with an overall decrease of approximately 15%, from 94 IU to 80 IU. Notably, two individuals reduced their insulin usage by 43% and 20%, respectively. This reduction not only benefits the patients but also translates into substantial financial savings, estimated at over N88,000 for the insurance provider and its enrollees during the study.

These outcomes demonstrate the impactful role that advanced health technology can play in managing chronic diseases like diabetes. By leveraging the capabilities of the Platos platform, participants were able to achieve enhanced health outcomes with fewer resources, leading to both improved quality of life and lower healthcare costs.

Dr. Ugochi Nwosu, Senior Vice President of Clinical Services at Reliance Health, expressed optimism regarding the study’s findings. She noted, “This pilot study illustrates the incredible potential of technology to enhance patient health outcomes and reduce expenses. We are proud to collaborate with Platos Health to deliver such impactful solutions to our enrollees.”

Similarly, Dr. Itopa Jimoh, Senior Medical Advisor at Platos Health, shared his excitement about the results observed among the Reliance HMO enrollees. He stated, “Our mission is to make effective chronic disease management accessible to everyone. This study reinforces the value of our platform in achieving that goal.”

This successful pilot not only highlights the effectiveness of the Platos Health platform but also reflects Reliance Health’s commitment to investing in innovative technologies that empower individuals and transform healthcare delivery in Nigeria. Together, these organizations are paving the way for a healthier future that is both affordable and accessible.

The collaboration between Reliance Health and Platos Health showcases the potential of health technology to significantly improve chronic disease management in Nigeria, particularly for diabetes care. As these innovative solutions gain traction, they could redefine healthcare experiences for many Nigerians, emphasizing the importance of technology in enhancing health outcomes and reducing costs.
