A local herbalist, identified as Ismail Usman, sustained life-threatening injuries after testing a self-made “bulletproof” charm in Kuchibuyi village, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
The bizarre incident occurred when Usman, seeking to prove the efficacy of his charm, shot himself in the stomach with a locally fabricated gun. Unfortunately, the charm failed, leaving him critically injured.
FCT Police Command spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident in a statement. She revealed that officers from the Byazhin Division responded to a distress call from a resident, Shandam Michael.
Upon arrival, they found Usman in critical condition and immediately rushed him to Kubwa General Hospital. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later transferred to Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital, where medical personnel are working tirelessly to save his life.
“A distress call reported a shocking event involving Ismail Usman, a local herbalist known for his unconventional methods,” Adeh said. “In a misguided attempt to test the effectiveness of a self-made ‘bulletproof’ charm, Usman shot himself in the stomach. Unfortunately, the charm failed to protect him, resulting in severe injuries.”
Police recovered the homemade gun and various charms from Usman’s residence during a search. The authorities have launched an investigation, and Usman may face charges for unlawful possession of firearms and attempted suicide, punishable under Section 231 of the Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria.
The incident has sparked discussions about the dangers of unscientific practices and the risks involved in self-experimentation.
