Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, said that home delivery of passports will start in June.
Tunji-Ojo made this announcement on May 24 while checking the new electronic gates at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
He said that the home delivery service will only be available in a few places at first to avoid problems. The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) will start this service in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kano, and Abuja.
For Nigerians living abroad, the service will begin in the United States and the United Kingdom, with tests to make sure it works well.

The minister said that the delay in starting home delivery was because there were no data centers. The NIS had been using a private company’s data center but needed its own to keep the data safe.
“We finished the whole plan, but when we took office, we saw there was no data center,” said Tunji-Ojo.
“We were using a private company’s data center, and we thank them for that help. But we think it’s better to have a permanent solution rather than quick fixes. We could have started in February, but we decided to build our data center from scratch to keep our data and national security safe.”
He added that it’s embarrassing that even though the NIS at 61 and in charge of Nigeria’s biometric data, still does not fully control the country’s data.
