The House of Representatives Committee on Sports has expressed its concerns regarding the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan-Enoh, and his apparent lack of genuine commitment towards Nigeria’s sports development goals.
The committee chairman, Hon. Ekene Adams, expressed disappointment, stating that despite their cooperative efforts with the Minister, he has not reciprocated with the desired level of transparency.
Hon. Ekene Adams, who represents the Chikun/Kajuru federal constituency of Kaduna State, highlighted the committee’s willingness to extend support and respect to the Minister due to his previous experience as a lawmaker.
However, they have discovered that he seems to be taking their cooperation for granted, which is deemed unacceptable.
Adams emphasized the Minister’s need to be more inquisitive and seek guidance from sports technocrats who have dedicated their lives to football as players and administrators.
Despite his background in farming, the Minister should recognize the expertise of those who have extensive knowledge and experience in the sports sector.
As an example of their concerns, Adams questioned the inclusion of a budget allocation for the renovation and maintenance of the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in the 2024 budget, despite the stadium already being handed over to the Kaduna State government.
Such actions raise doubts about the Minister’s decision-making process and raise questions about his understanding of the current situation.
Adams expressed his frustration, where he stated that despite their sincere efforts to establish a smooth and productive working relationship with the Minister, he has failed to give him the same level of sincerity.
The House Committee on Sports remains concerned about the Minister’s commitment to Nigeria’s sports development goals and are hoping for improved transparency and cooperation moving forward.
