Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has expressed renewed hope regarding the potential release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Kalu stated that he is actively working towards making this happen.
During a meeting with the South East Legislators Forum in Abuja, Kalu shared details about ongoing high-level discussions with relevant authorities aimed at securing Kanu’s freedom. The meeting was attended by lawmakers from the South East State Houses of Assembly, led by Kingsley Ikoro, the Majority Leader of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, who gathered to address regional issues.
Kalu emphasized, “I am dedicated to advocating for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release, and I believe it will happen soon. Please keep us in your prayers.” He reassured the lawmakers that the outcomes of these behind-the-scenes negotiations would soon become evident.
The Deputy Speaker also highlighted the importance of supporting the South East Development Commission (SEDC) in achieving its goals, underscoring the government’s commitment to the Igbo people and Nigerians as a whole.
He remarked, “Networking is more powerful than money. Unity is strength. We often overlook our own, which leads to significant losses. We must put an end to the sit-at-home orders that harm our people. Coming together is essential for growth and progress.”
Kalu commended the lawmakers for leaving their respective State Houses of Assembly to gain exposure at the Federal House, stating that it would enhance their legislative capabilities and enable them to speak from an informed perspective.
Regarding the upcoming zonal public hearing, he urged support for the constitutional amendment process, which is expected to commence in the first and second quarters of next year.
As members of the South East Legislative Forum, Kalu encouraged them to unify around a common legislative agenda. “Let’s develop ideas on how we can utilize our collective strength,” he said, also advocating for the SEDC despite some claims that the President would not support it.
Kalu concluded by stressing the need to support the President in building capacity for the region.
It is noteworthy that Nnamdi Kanu, who is currently facing charges of treason, has been held by the Department of State Services since June 2021 after being arrested in Kenya and extradited to Nigeria. Recently, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, also expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu would facilitate Kanu’s release.
