The House of Representatives has strongly condemned the alarming increase in illegal mining activities across the country, expressing deep concern for the dire living conditions faced by host communities.
During an investigative hearing held in Abuja on Monday, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, voiced his strong disapproval of this growing problem.
He emphasized that the rise in illegal mining is a clear indication of significant social, institutional, and structural challenges within the nation.
The purpose of the investigation is to evaluate the effectiveness of regulatory bodies in fulfilling their responsibilities and ensuring compliance with mining practices, as stipulated by the Nigeria Minerals and Mining Act (Amendment) Bill and the Nigeria Solid Mineral Development Company (Establishment) Bill.
“The decision to investigate illegal mining demonstrates the House of Reps’ unwavering commitment to taking decisive action against these illicit mining practices”.
“It also reflects our dedication to addressing the non-compliance with established standards in the solid minerals sector,” stated Speaker Abbas.
He further highlighted the deplorable economic and social conditions endured by various communities affected by mining operations in Nigeria.
These communities have endured years of neglect, deprivation, and severe environmental degradation, including air and water pollution resulting from unsafe practices employed by illegal miners.
Jonathan Gaza, Chairman of the House Committee on Solid Mineral, emphasized the necessity of the investigative hearing to ensure transparency and accountability. He stressed that illegal mining poses significant risks to the nation’s economy, environment, and security.
Gaza also emphasized that unregulated exploitation of natural resources jeopardizes the sustainability of the mineral sector.
Urgent and decisive steps must be taken to address this pressing issue and ensure that the solid mineral sector operates within the framework of the law.
