The House of Representatives has pledged to hold accountable workers who allegedly shutdown critical infrastructure during the recent nationwide strike, declaring its commitment to ensuring that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.
In a statement titled “Minimum wage dispute: House of Representatives welcomes suspension of the strike, restates commitment to remain responsive,” Hon. Akin Rotimi, the Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, highlighted the House’s support for an improved living wage for Nigerian workers. However, he criticized the Organized Labour leaders for actions that exacerbate the suffering of ordinary citizens and engaging in persistent misinformation and disinformation.
While expressing support for improved wages and working conditions, the House urged caution in increasing the minimum wage beyond what the economy can sustain, to avoid unintended adverse economic consequences. The House also condemned the shutdown of critical infrastructure, such as the national grid, as economic sabotage and called for those responsible to be held accountable.
The statement expressed the House’s acknowledgment of the recent industrial action by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and welcomed the suspension of the strike for one week to allow for further negotiation. It reaffirmed the Speaker’s advocacy for a living wage and better working conditions for Nigerian workers, emphasizing the importance of addressing key national priorities through legislative action.
