Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Tajudeen Abbas, has reaffirmed the National Assembly’s dedication to eradicating gender-based violence (GBV) against women across the nation.
Abbas made this commitment during a speech to activists participating in a march to kick off the ‘16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence’ on Monday in Abuja.
He noted that this year’s observance comes at a time when women are expressing anger and frustration, particularly in light of a United Nations report indicating that a woman is murdered every 10 minutes globally.
Stressing the urgency of the issue, Abbas emphasized the need for the parliament to collaborate closely with relevant authorities, especially law enforcement agencies, to address this alarming trend.
“I want to make it clear that the National Assembly is determined to take all necessary actions to significantly reduce, if not completely eliminate, all forms of violence against women and girls in the near future,” he stated.
He also announced that the National Assembly, particularly the House of Representatives, will actively engage in the upcoming national action plan on violence against women, ensuring their representation in the initiative.
“We will take part in developing and implementing policies aimed at substantially decreasing the occurrence of violence against women, children, and girls,” he added.
The Speaker highlighted that the House would actively engage in the 16-day campaign, signaling that it is time to declare “enough is enough.”
