Asue Ighodalo, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) nominee for the upcoming gubernatorial election in Edo State, scheduled for September 21, has confidently stated that the decision regarding the next governor will rest solely with the people of Edo.

Ighodalo shared his views during an Interview, He emphasized that the selection of Godwin Obaseki’s successor should not be dictated by influential PDP figures like Nyesom Wike or anyone else, but rather determined by the citizens of the state.

This remark follows Wike’s declaration last Friday that he would not support Ighodalo, who has been endorsed by the outgoing governor.

“I made it clear to them (Obaseki and Ighodalo) that I will not be backing you, nor anyone else. My previous support did not yield any positive outcome; instead, I faced disrespect,” Wike stated.

In response, Ighodalo contested Wike’s assertion, suggesting that circumstances might have influenced Wike’s stance, and he remains open to reconsideration.

“I trust that he will honor the commitment he made to me, but if he has decided otherwise, that’s his prerogative,” Ighodalo remarked.

“Our discussions revolved around governance and how to improve Nigeria and Edo State. Ultimately, we concluded with Wike stating that he would refrain from involving himself in Edo State matters.”

Ighodalo continued, “Regardless of Wike’s change of heart, the determination of who will lead Edo State lies with its citizens—not with any former governor or minister. Only those who hold PVCs in Edo State, supported by the divine, will make this choice. I fear no one but God,” he concluded.
