A delegation from the Ogbakor ethnic nationality in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State paid a courtesy visit to Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the Managing Director/CEO of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
This historic visit marked the first time Ogbakor Ikwerre visited NDDC’s headquarters.
During the visit, Sir Barr. Godspower Onuekwa, the group’s representative, emphasized the need for the NDDC to engage Ikwerre youths and the community in its programs and activities. He pointed out that, despite being the largest ethnic group in Rivers State, the Ikwerre people often do not receive fair treatment.
Onuekwa presented a formal list of the community’s needs, which he believes will contribute to developing the Ikwerre people and their locality.
In response, Dr. Ogbuku highlighted the NDDC’s initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable development in the Niger Delta region.
He spoke about Project Hope, which focuses on youth engagement, and the Niger Delta Chambers of Commerce, aimed at supporting youth involvement in commerce.
Dr. Ogbuku also discussed NDDC’s scholarship programs, noting their commitment to encouraging postgraduate education.
The Commission plans to provide 200 scholarships for studies abroad and 600 scholarships within the region to ensure that youths are not deterred from pursuing their educational careers.
He underscored the importance of grassroots partnerships and community engagement in driving development in the area.
