The Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, has constituted a high-powered investigative team to uncover the details surrounding a suspected bomb explosion in Umuneke Obazu Mbieri, located in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Henry Okafor, disclosed that the investigative team will be headed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
The team has been tasked with conducting a thorough inquiry to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
According to Okafor, the Deputy Commissioner of Police from the Command and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Mbaitoli, SP Wet Ben, have already visited the scene.
Additionally, the Deputy Commissioner of Operations has carried out clearance operations to ensure the area is safe.
The CP has urged residents to remain calm and continue their daily activities, reassuring them of their safety.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Sunday at around 1:00 a.m., following the unusual sighting of a suspected drone hovering over Umuneke in Obazu Mbieri and neighboring Umunjam and Amaulu communities in Ihitte Mbieri Autonomous Communities.
Roughly ten minutes after the drone was spotted, a loud explosion rocked the area, destroying one building and causing structural damage to several others.
Eyewitness accounts suggest the impact of the explosion was felt over 2 kilometers from its epicenter.
Local authorities, including the Chairman of Mbaitoli Local Government Area, Hon. Ifunanya Nwanegwo, and the Secretary General of Obazu Autonomous Community, Hon. Emeka Nosiri, were among the first to visit the site.
They encouraged residents to remain calm, assuring them that efforts are underway to identify the cause of the explosion.
