In a significant step towards resolving the long-standing issue of erratic power supply in Imo State, the government has entered into a partnership with Madkour Group, an Egyptian power generation, transmission, and distribution company.
The formalization of this collaboration took place yesterday at the Government House in Owerri, where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between Madkour Group and the Orashi Electricity Company of Imo State. The agreement follows months of discussions between the management teams of both entities.
Representing Madkour Group, President Dr. Mostafa Madkour put pen to paper, while Valentine Obumeyan, Acting General Manager of the Orashi Electricity Company of Imo State, signed on behalf of the state government. Together, they have committed to igniting a power revolution in Imo State by January of next year.
During the signing ceremony, Governor Hope Uzodimma addressed the audience, highlighting his administration’s proactive approach to addressing the power challenges faced by the state.
He emphasized that Imo State had already enacted a law on power generation, leading to the establishment of the Orashi Electricity Company Limited.
Acknowledging the capital-intensive nature of the power sector, Governor Uzodimma expressed the necessity of partnering with external entities.
He stated, “The arrival of Madkour Group as technical and financial partners for the Orashi Electricity Company Limited of Imo State is a testament to the need for collaboration in this endeavor.”
Governor Uzodimma also revealed that the Federal Government had extended its support to Imo State in the establishment of the company. This collaboration ensures a robust technical and financial foundation for the state’s power generation, distribution, and transmission efforts.
With a shared vision for progress, Governor Uzodimma confidently announced, “By January 2025, we will be capable of generating, transmitting, and distributing our own power”.
This ambitious goal reflects the commitment of the state government and its partners to provide reliable electricity to the people of Imo State.
Expressing gratitude for the trust placed in their capabilities, President Dr. Madkour, on behalf of Madkour Group, thanked Governor Uzodimma for embracing this partnership and opening the doors for a transformative collaboration.
