Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has officially sanctioned the introduction of a minimum wage of N70,000 for employees within the state.
This decision follows an intensive two-day meeting involving the state government and representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Union Negotiating Council.
Governor Uzodimma highlighted that the new wage reflects his administration’s dedication to enhancing the welfare of the state’s workforce. He emphasized that the current economic challenges and increasing living expenses necessitate improved compensation for workers.
In conjunction with the minimum wage announcement, the governor revealed that payments for outstanding gratuities owed to retirees from both local and state governments will begin on Tuesday, November 26. He also committed to reviewing pension allowances upward once the ongoing pension audit is completed.
Furthermore, Governor Uzodimma stated that employees on consolidated salaries who are already earning the N70,000 minimum wage will receive an additional 10 percent on top of their earnings.
An implementation committee, which includes members from the NLC, TUC, and the state government, has reached an agreement on the minimum wage and the necessary adjustments.
The NLC and TUC Chairmen in Imo State expressed their appreciation to Governor Uzodimma for this generous move, assuring that workers would respond by demonstrating increased dedication and productivity in their roles.
