Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has expressed deep concern regarding the high costs associated with conducting elections in Nigeria, labeling them as excessively burdensome.
During a presentation to the National Assembly regarding the implementation of the 2024 budget, Yakubu pointed out that despite INEC being one of the nation’s largest employers, it was operating with a significantly reduced budget of N40 billion, far less than the N80 billion originally requested.
He emphasized that this budget cut has strained the commission’s capacity to fulfill its duties effectively. In light of these challenges, Yakubu urged lawmakers to organize a retreat aimed at fostering collaboration between the legislature and INEC, facilitating discussions to address the critical issues plaguing the electoral process in the country.
“We require a substantial dialogue; the commission cannot perpetually conduct elections throughout the year,” he remarked.
Additionally, he expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of INEC’s infrastructure, specifically mentioning the 860 buildings nationwide that are in dire need of repair.
To address these pressing issues, Yakubu called on the National Assembly to ensure that the electoral commission receives adequate funding, as it has submitted a budget proposal amounting to N126 billion.
