The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has distanced itself from a purported “Biafra Declaration” made in Finland, describing the event as a scam orchestrated by an illegitimate group.
In a statement issued Sunday by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, IPOB emphasized that there can be no second Biafra declaration beyond the one made by its eternal leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, in 1967.
“What IPOB, under Nnamdi Kanu, is pursuing is the restoration of the sovereignty declared in 1967, which was disrupted by genocide perpetrated by Nigerian and British forces,” the group said, urging the United Nations to supervise a referendum for Biafrans to decide their political future.
IPOB condemned the Finland-based event, accusing its organizers of attempting to discredit the genuine Biafra struggle and destabilize the Southeast region. “The so-called declaration is a charade, a diversionary tactic by agents of provocation seeking to undermine IPOB’s peaceful efforts,” the statement read.
The group commended media outlets for ignoring the Finland event, adding that its organizers are “criminals and uninformed agents” who have tarnished the struggle for Biafra’s restoration.
Reaffirming its commitment to the original declaration, IPOB urged Biafrans and the international community to disregard the Finland group’s activities, stating: “The Finland declaration is nothing but a scam; the true Biafra independence was declared in 1967 by Dim Ojukwu and remains the foundation of IPOB’s pursuit for self-determination.”
