A coalition of Jewish priests, representing the Unique Forum of Orthodox Judaism, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In an open letter directed to the President, the group argued that freeing Kanu would contribute to restoring peace and stability in Nigeria, particularly in the South-East region, which has been marred by rising tensions due to his ongoing detention.
Rosh Nasishemtov Ihe Madunweiheyah, the leader of the group, visited the Isiama Afaraukwu palace, the residence of Kanu’s late father, to emphasize their stance. He asserted that Kanu is being held unjustly.
The group urged the President to respond to the increasing calls for Kanu’s release, highlighting that he seeks only the welfare of his marginalized people and has not committed any offense deserving of imprisonment.
Madunweiheyah attributed Nigeria’s challenges to Kanu’s continued incarceration, suggesting that divine displeasure is reflected in the nation’s struggles due to Kanu’s plight.
The Forum contended that, contrary to popular belief, Kanu is not the source of Nigeria’s issues but rather part of the solution.
“We respectfully implore President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his administration to recognize the importance of releasing our son and brother Nnamdi Kanu, allowing him to worship the Creator of heaven and earth, which will promote peace in our beloved nation,” the letter expressed.
This appeal comes after Kanu’s family voiced new worries regarding his deteriorating health, urging President Tinubu to allow him access to adequate medical care outside the Department of State Services’ detention facility in Abuja.
