The Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service has shut down the main office of the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company because they owe over N600 million in taxes. On Friday, Jerry Adams, the Executive Chairman of the revenue service, led the operation. He explained that this action is based on their legal powers under Section 104 (1) & (4) of the Personal Income Tax Act, 2011, and Section 37 (3) & (4) of the Kaduna State Tax Codification and Consolidation Law, 2020.

He said they got a court order to close and take over the company’s property until the unpaid taxes are fully paid. “We are here to carry out the court’s order allowing us to seize Kaduna Electric’s property because they owe taxes from 2015 to 2022,” Adams said. “Earlier, we had a meeting with them, and they agreed to pay a large part of the N600 million they owe, but they didn’t follow through.”

“We have talked to them many times since then, and each time they promise to pay but never do. So, the court has ordered us to shut them down. The office will stay closed until they pay according to our agreement.” Adams also noted that not paying taxes is a crime and that the government won’t tolerate people ignoring their tax obligations.
