The Kaduna State Government has issued a stern warning that any protests not approved by security agencies will no longer be tolerated. This announcement highlights the growing concern over criminals who disguise themselves as protesters to engage in looting, vandalism, and terrorizing innocent citizens, as was recently seen on August 1st and 5th, 2024, in the cities of Kaduna and Zaria.

26 protesters remanded in prison in Kaduna

The statement, delivered on Saturday by Samuel Aruwan, the Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, sheds light on the disturbing trend of criminals using legitimate protests as a cover for their illegal activities. The events of early August, he noted, serve as a clear indication that these criminal elements are intent on throwing the state into turmoil, using protests as a smokescreen for their sinister plans.

Aruwan emphasized the severe consequences that could arise if these plots are allowed to progress unchecked. The Kaduna State Government, in collaboration with security forces, is resolute in its determination to prevent any anti-state activities from gaining ground. The commissioner made it clear that those posing as protesters to cause chaos will not be allowed to operate freely.

While acknowledging the importance of citizens’ rights to free speech, peaceful assembly, and other constitutional freedoms as outlined in the amended 1999 Constitution, Aruwan stressed that any processions that have not been thoroughly vetted will remain prohibited, especially in light of the current security concerns.

The Commissioner also revealed troubling intelligence reports indicating that these criminal groups are now recruiting children and vulnerable individuals to further their dangerous agendas. He warned that the Kaduna State Security Council, under the leadership of Governor Uba Sani, has carefully reviewed the security situation, particularly the ongoing curfew from 6 pm to 8 am, and is fully prepared to take action against anyone attempting to stir unrest under the guise of protest.

Aruwan concluded by urging citizens to continue adhering to the curfew and to report any suspicious activities to the Security Operations Room using the provided contact numbers: 0903 400 0060 and 0817 018 9999. The government remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents of Kaduna State.
