Amidst the ongoing power struggle for the Kano emirship, the Kano State House of Assembly has approved a bill to establish second-class Emirates within the state.
During Tuesday’s plenary session chaired by Speaker Jibril Ismail Falgore, the House passed the bill. Earlier, lawmakers had introduced the bill and subsequently resumed its consideration after a recess.
Deputy Speaker Muhammad Bello Butubutu moved for the adoption and passage of the bill following second and third readings.
The creation of these new second-class Emirates—Rano, Karaye, and Gaya—has sparked further controversy, notably excluding Bichi from the legislative approval on Tuesday.
Previously, Bichi had been part of the emirates established under former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, with Alhaji Nasiru Ado Bayero, the deposed Emir of Kano Aminu Ado Bayero, serving as its emir before his removal.
This legislative move comes amidst the prolonged dispute over the Kano emirship, intensified after the reinstatement of Muhammad Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
