Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has submitted a budget proposal of N549 billion for the 2025 fiscal year to the State House of Assembly for approval.
During a presentation on Friday in Kano, Yusuf described the budget as the “Budget of Hope, Human Capital, and Economic Development,” emphasizing its objective to enhance the welfare of the state’s residents.
The budget comprises N312 billion allocated for capital expenditures and N236 billion designated for recurrent expenditures.
Yusuf noted that the anticipated budget, once approved, is expected to establish a capital-to-recurrent expenditure ratio of 57:43 per cent, respectively.
He elaborated that a significant portion of the capital spending, amounting to N461 billion, will be directed towards social and economic sectors.
The education sector received a substantial allocation of N168 billion, exceeding the recommendations by UNESCO and the UN, which accounts for 31 per cent of the total budget. The health sector is set to receive N90 billion, representing 16.5 per cent of the budget.
The governor indicated that these funds will support the implementation of policies and programs designed to ensure quality education across all levels.
Additionally, N21 billion, or 3.83 per cent, is earmarked for the agricultural sector, while infrastructure development will receive N70 billion, which constitutes 12.87 per cent of the budget.
Further allocations include N23 billion, representing 4 per cent for security, justice, and emergency services, and N27 billion, or 4.96 per cent, for water supply and rural development.
Governor Yusuf urged the lawmakers to expedite the budget’s passage to allow the government to continue delivering the benefits of democracy to the people of Kano State.
