The Katsina State High Court has ruled against a lawsuit aimed at removing Umar Iliya Damagum from his position as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The legal action was initiated by Ibrahim Musa, a party member, who contested Damagum’s appointment, claiming that the process to replace former National Chairman Dr. Iyorchia Ayu was unconstitutional. Musa argued that Ayu’s successor should have been selected from the North-Central geopolitical zone, which is Ayu’s home region.
However, Justice Abdullahi Bawa-Faskari dismissed the lawsuit, stating that the issue pertains to the internal governance of the party. He emphasized that the court lacks jurisdiction over such matters.
In his judgment, Justice Bawa-Faskari supported the preliminary objection raised by the defendants, asserting that the case was “not justiciable” as it concerns internal party affairs.
“The matter is not justiciable, as it falls entirely within the internal affairs of the party, and the court has no authority to intervene,” Justice Bawa-Faskari stated.
