The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has denied recent reports alleging that it ignored directives from the Minister of Power concerning customer disconnections.
In a statement issued by the Head of Corporate Communications, Sani Sani, KEDCO clarified that it has remained compliant with all ministerial instructions, including those related to billing during recent outages. “We also want to reassure our customers of our continued commitment to improving the quality and reliability of electricity supply,” the company stated.
Sani responded to an article by AREWA Punch Report, which suggested that KEDCO had disregarded the Minister’s orders on disconnections. “KEDCO’s attention has been drawn to claims that we have defied the Minister of Power’s directives on customer disconnections,” he said.
He further explained, “The company has fully adhered to the directives and has taken no action to disconnect customers in violation of the Minister’s orders. Following the blackout that impacted parts of the North from 4:57 a.m. on October 21 to 4:56 p.m. on October 30, 2024, KEDCO has strictly followed all guidelines provided.”
Addressing concerns about billing, Sani clarified that recent disconnections are related to outstanding payments for September’s electricity consumption. “Bills currently being collected cover September’s usage, which was billed in October. Customers who have not yet paid these bills are subject to disconnection,” he said.
According to Sani, the Minister of Power stipulated that customers should not be billed for the outage period from October 21 to October 30. “KEDCO will honor this directive by ensuring that customers are not charged for this period, and the adjustment will be reflected in November’s bills,” he added.
Sani encouraged customers to pay their outstanding bills on time, emphasizing that timely payments benefit both KEDCO and the power sector overall.
He concluded by reassuring customers of KEDCO’s commitment to adhering to all regulatory requirements and maintaining fair and accurate billing practices.
