The Kogi State Chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has called for the immediate resignation of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman Olanipekun Olukoyede, citing his mishandling of the situation involving former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello.
In a statement released on Saturday, Hon. Esseyin Oluwakayode Emmanuel, the PDP Youth Leader for Kabba/Bunu Local Government, emphasized the need for Olukoyede’s resignation to protect the EFCC’s reputation and uphold President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s anti-corruption agenda.
The statement reads, “The recent confrontation between the EFCC and Alhaji Yahaya Bello is a regrettable episode that has negatively impacted the credibility of our nation’s anti-corruption efforts.
“This incident reflects poorly on the leadership and operational integrity of the EFCC, making it imperative to address these concerns to restore public confidence in the Commission.”
The PDP acknowledged Bello’s voluntary appearance at the EFCC headquarters, viewing it as a commitment to transparency and cooperation. However, the statement criticized the EFCC’s unprofessional handling of the inquiry, which turned a routine process into a public spectacle, undermining the Commission’s reputation and principles of justice.
Emmanuel demanded assurances from authorities that Bello would not face any harm as a result of his cooperation. He insisted that the EFCC must follow legal protocols without intimidation.
“The EFCC Chairman must issue a public apology to Alhaji Yahaya Bello and Alhaji Usman Ododo for the unwarranted provocation and reckless actions that led to the incident at the Kogi State Liaison Office,” he stated, describing such conduct as unacceptable for a federal institution.
The statement urged President Tinubu to intervene and relieve the EFCC Chairman of his duties, signaling that the administration does not tolerate misconduct in sensitive national matters.
The PDP Youth Leader also praised the composure and maturity demonstrated by Kogi State Governor Alhaji Usman Ododo throughout the episode, highlighting his commitment to peace and stability.
The PDP Youth Secretariat reaffirmed its dedication to the rule of law and accountability, stating, “We will continue to advocate for justice and fairness, ensuring that public institutions are not misused for political vendettas. Only through a transparent and impartial process can we uphold the integrity of our democracy and the rights of all citizens.”
