As the 2027 general elections approach, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and former governor of Kano State, has condemned certain Northern leaders for disseminating misinformation.
Kwankwaso accused these leaders of meddling in the candidate selection process, particularly concerning the presidential election, and stated that it is inappropriate for them to assert they are representatives of the region.
In an interview, the NNPP’s 2023 presidential candidate expressed that such actions only serve to create divisions and obstruct democracy by endorsing unqualified leaders.
“The events of the previous elections should prompt these leaders to step back from candidate selection and allow the electorate to decide who they truly want as president,” Kwankwaso asserted. “This oppressive behaviour is sowing discord in the community. All actions should be grounded in truth.”
He emphasized the importance of fairness, noting, “The elders, who are often our parents and brothers in this northern region, should avoid favouritism when presenting candidates.”
Kwankwaso criticized the actions of a few individuals who spread falsehoods, claiming a consensus on candidates from the North. “There are only two or three of them, yet they spread lies instead of promoting their children in places like Port Harcourt or Abuja,” he added.
Additionally, he addressed rumours suggesting an agreement among himself, former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Peter Obi of the LP, to alternate the presidency. Kwankwaso stated he was unaware of such an arrangement, even though he had heard about Atiku’s group meeting with local leaders and Mallams in preparation for 2027.
“This situation truly troubles me. It has been claimed that the elders are misrepresenting facts,” he expressed. “I learned that around forty-five Mallams were gathered, spreading these falsehoods. However, no such agreement exists.”
Kwankwaso concluded by firmly denying any pact that would see Atiku serve for four years, followed by himself and then Peter Obi. “This agreement has not been made, and it simply does not exist,” he asserted.
