Activist and Labour Party chieftain Aisha Yesufu has expressed that Nigerians are not particularly affected by the absence of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, who are currently abroad.
Reports indicate that President Tinubu has been out of the country since October 3 for his annual leave, while Shettima departed Nigeria on Wednesday for a brief official visit to Sweden.
Their absences have sparked discussions and raised concerns about a potential leadership vacuum, as there was no formal transfer of power during their time away.
However, the presidency has sought to reassure citizens, stating that there is no governance vacuum. Bayo Onanuga, the special adviser to the president on information and strategy, asserted that the government would continue to function effectively despite the president and vice president being out of the country.
“It is crucial to understand that both the President and Vice President remain engaged in national affairs, even while abroad. There is no leadership void in the country,” Onanuga emphasized.
He elaborated that President Tinubu is currently on a two-week working vacation and is actively involved in responding to calls and issuing directives pertaining to state matters.
In response to this statement, Aisha Yesufu took to her X account to voice her skepticism regarding the legitimacy of the Tinubu administration, referring to the president and vice president as “seat warmers.”
“There cannot be a vacuum in something that was never there. Nobody feels the absence of seat warmers,” Yesufu asserted.
