The Labour Party (LP) has raised concerns over the behaviour of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, following his recent threat to obstruct the re-election of FCT Senator Ireti Kingibe in 2027. The LP has urged President Bola Tinubu to address the issue and remind Wike that he is a presidential appointee who can be dismissed without fanfare.

In a bold challenge, Wike dared Senator Kingibe to contest for the FCT seat again in 2027, confident that she would lose. He claimed that what had happened in the previous election would not repeat itself. However, the LP argued that as a presidential appointee, Wike should not interfere with the electoral process that rightfully elected Kingibe.

LP Chairman in the FCT, Peter Dugwu, expressed the party’s concerns in an interview, stating, “We are advising President Tinubu to call Wike to order. He is merely an appointed minister. Ireti Kingibe, on the other hand, was duly elected through a legitimate process.” Dugwu criticized Wike’s threats, emphasizing that the decision on Kingibe’s political future lies with the Labour Party, not Wike. He stressed that Wike has no right to dictate the senator’s fate.

Dugwu further reminded Wike of his position, stating, “Wike should remember that he is just a tenant in the FCT, appointed by the president, and can be removed at any time without ceremony.” This statement highlights the LP’s demand for accountability and respect for the democratic process.

Ajuji Ahmed, the national chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), joined in condemning Wike’s comments, labeling them as verbal violence. Ahmed firmly stated that Wike lacks the authority to influence the re-election of other politicians. He emphasized that Wike is neither a member of the Labour Party nor a representative of the FCT electorate. Ahmed concluded by asserting that there is no justification for Wike’s interference, declaring his comments as inappropriate and unacceptable.

The LP’s call for President Tinubu’s intervention underscores the importance of upholding the principles of democracy and fair elections. It also serves as a reminder that those in positions of power should respect the electoral process and not attempt to manipulate or influence its outcomes.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, it is crucial for leaders to prioritize transparency, accountability, and adherence to democratic principles. The criticisms directed at Wike highlight the need for public servants to act responsibly and serve the interests of the people rather than their personal agendas.

The LP’s demand for accountability and President Tinubu’s attention reflects the growing call for ethical leadership and respect for democratic institutions. The interference of a presidential appointee in the electoral affairs of FCT raises concerns about the integrity of the political process. As the nation moves forward, it is essential to ensure that elected officials and appointees carry out their duties with utmost professionalism and refrain from actions that undermine the democratic fabric of Nigeria.
