Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has expressed his condolences to President Bola Tinubu, Anambra Governor Charles Soludo, and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike following the tragic stampedes that occurred in their regions.
These unfortunate incidents resulted in numerous fatalities and left many injured in Abuja and Okija, Anambra.
In a statement released on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, Sanwo-Olu conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to the families affected by these sorrowful events.
“With deep sadness, I extend my sincere condolences to Nigerians, especially the residents of Anambra State and Abuja, for the devastating loss of life during food distribution events at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, and a community center in Okija,” he stated.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Lagos State, we express our profound sympathies to all who are mourning. We share in their grief and stand in solidarity with them during this challenging time.”
Sanwo-Olu highlighted the alarming trend of stampedes leading to tragic outcomes and urged individuals and organizations to exercise caution in their charitable and humanitarian initiatives.
He pointed out that the recent tragedies, occurring just days after 35 individuals lost their lives at a children’s carnival at the Islamic High School in Bashorun, Ibadan, are concerning and merit serious attention.
“While caring for the needy and vulnerable is essential, it is crucial that proper planning and safety measures are implemented to prevent further incidents like those experienced in Ibadan, Abuja, and Okija,” he emphasized.
The governor concluded with prayers for the souls of the innocent lives lost in the stampedes, wishing strength and comfort for the families enduring this profound loss.
