The Lagos State Government refuted claims that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had filed a lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) regarding an alleged plan to arrest and prosecute him following his tenure on Wednesday.
Recent reports (not from Channels Television) suggested that Sanwo-Olu had sought a court order to prevent the EFCC from taking legal action against him after his governorship ends.
However, in a statement, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, emphasized that the governor was not involved in any such legal action and that an investigation would be conducted into how this misinformation originated without the governor’s knowledge.
Pedro stated, “We need to clarify that Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has neither sued nor engaged any legal practitioner to file a suit on his behalf regarding this matter.” He described the claims as misleading, noting that the governor enjoys constitutional immunity and has nearly three years remaining in his term, making such legal actions unnecessary.
The commissioner also dismissed assertions that the EFCC was investigating the governor, asserting that the anti-graft agency had not extended any invitations or threats of arrest against him or his staff.
“For clarity, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has demonstrated exemplary service and prudent management of public resources,” Pedro added. “Thus, he is focused on improving the living conditions for all Lagosians and has no cause for concern about any legal issues when his tenure concludes in May 2027.”
The statement followed reports titled, “Sanwo-Olu Sues EFCC Over Alleged Plan to Arrest, Prosecute Him After Tenure,” which the government sought to clarify.
