A yet-to-be-identified pedestrian was crushed to death late on Saturday by an overspeeding Toyota Venza along the Onipanu area of Lagos State.

The tragic incident escalated when angry miscreants set the vehicle ablaze in protest against the reckless driving of the car’s owner.

The accident caused significant traffic disruption, with commuters experiencing gridlock along the usually busy road due to the burnt vehicle obstructing the highway.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement signed by its Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.

According to Oke-Osanyintolu, “In response to distress calls received at 8:45 PM via the CRM on 767/112 Toll-Free Emergency numbers, LASEMA activated its Emergency Response Plans, deploying the Cobra Response Team to the Onipanu area.”

Upon arrival at 8:48 PM, LASEMA responders observed that a Toyota Venza with registration number EKY 839 HU had oversped and struck a male pedestrian who was crossing the highway.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed, leading to the fatal collision. The pedestrian succumbed to his injuries before responders arrived at the scene.

The LASEMA boss further noted, “The volatility of the scene was escalated by miscreants who vandalized and set the vehicle ablaze.

The Agency’s Response Team has informed the Nigerian Police Force and deployed a sophisticated recovery truck for the operation.”
