Speaker Mudashiru Obasa of the Lagos State House of Assembly has lauded the tranquility maintained in the state during the ongoing nationwide protests, calling it praiseworthy.
Dr. Obasa celebrated the peaceful demeanor of protesters in Lagos, throughout the South-West region, and across significant areas of Nigeria, commending the citizens for responding thoughtfully and wisely to the current situation.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Eromosele Ebhomele, the Speaker noted that the demonstrators largely adhered to legal guidelines, allowing residents to continue their daily activities without disruption.
“The behavior of Lagosians since the start of the nationwide protests on Thursday is commendable. While many chose to heed the call for calm and stayed home, those who opted to voice their concerns did so lawfully,” he remarked.
“These concerns have been duly acknowledged, and I have faith that both the state and federal governments are actively engaged in efforts to elevate Lagos and Nigeria beyond our current circumstances.
“President Bola Tinubu is spearheading initiatives that have the potential to advance Nigeria towards the aspirations we all share. In the meantime, he is taking measures to alleviate the food shortage that has sparked these protests.
“In Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, with the backing of the House of Assembly under my leadership, has laid out plans for further development while maintaining existing standards,” Dr. Obasa stated.
The Speaker pointed out that Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration is dedicated to addressing hunger across the state, notably through the Sunday Markets initiative, which offers a 25 percent discount on essential food items and is set to be revived soon.
“The state government has committed to continually delivering the benefits of democracy to its citizens. Initiatives such as the Medical Outreach program, providing free treatments, free delivery services for expectant mothers, and reduced fares on government transport are among the steps being taken,” Obasa explained.
He assured that the House would not only work in tandem with the executive branch to ensure residents benefit from the administration, but that the legislative body would remain a beacon of hope for the people of Lagos.
The Speaker, who had previously engaged with and secured commitments from Agege residents to abstain from the protests, also expressed gratitude towards law enforcement for their professional conduct in maintaining order, while recognizing the contributions of religious leaders, traditional authorities, community figures, development associations, market leaders, and artisans for their cooperation and support of the government.
