The Lagos State Government, in collaboration with the Nigeria Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), has launched an initiative to enhance teacher professional development. This effort aims to equip educators with the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively implement the revamped school curriculum.
The recent two-day “2024 Teacher Professional Development Summit ” held at the Lagos State University (LASU) emphasized the importance of continuous teacher training and development. Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Ali-Balogun, stressed that well-prepared educators are crucial for effective curriculum implementation.
He highlighted the THEMES+ agenda, which integrates education and technology in Lagos State, and emphasized the need for teachers to be proficient in leveraging technology to enhance teaching and learning.
Prof. Ismail Jinadu, executive secretary of NERDC, reiterated the organization’s commitment to supporting teacher professional development. He emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to ensure that teachers receive the necessary support and resources to excel in their roles. Dr. Hakeem Shittu of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) emphasized the need for teachers to be empowered with the skills and knowledge necessary to raise children who become job creators.
The summit featured interactive sessions, workshops, and exhibitions showcasing innovative teaching methods and educational technologies. Participants included educators, policymakers, and industry experts. The event underscored the significance of continuous teacher professional development in enhancing the quality of education in Lagos State.
Dr. Neehmot, Director of the Education Research Centre (FCT), stressed the need for a teacher professional development program that is aligned with global best practices. He emphasized the importance of balancing innovation with foundational knowledge to ensure that teachers are well-prepared to address the challenges of the 21st century.
