The Lagos State government has reaffirmed its dedication to initiatives aimed at fostering opportunities, alleviating poverty, encouraging entrepreneurship, and ensuring inclusivity and economic empowerment for its residents.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made this declaration during the second phase of the 2024 Micro Enterprise Support Initiative, which supports 1,500 individuals in Lagos. The event was organized by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA).
In addition, Governor Sanwo-Olu announced plans for collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development to ensure the successful implementation of the 2,000 Housing Units project at Lagos Renewed Hope City in the Ibeju Lekki area.
The governor also highlighted the upcoming 18th annual Lagos State Town Hall meeting focused on security, which serves as a significant gathering for stakeholders in the field.
According to a statement from Gboyega Akosile, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, the micro-enterprise support initiative included the distribution of various tools and equipment to assist beneficiaries in their business endeavors.
These items catered to the diverse needs of entrepreneurs and included stone grinding machines, pepper grinders, sewing machines, hair dryers, barbing kits, standing facial steamers, aluminum cutting machines, two-phase burners, cake mixers, welding machines, agricultural supplies, and cash grants.
Although Governor Sanwo-Olu briefly addressed the gathering before heading to Abuja, he was represented at the event by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat. The governor emphasized that through skill acquisition, capacity building, and financial support, poverty could be eradicated in Lagos, paving the way for widespread prosperity.
He described the initiative as a clear demonstration of his administration’s commitment to cultivating a “Greater Lagos,” where every citizen has the opportunity to flourish and play an active role in collective advancement.
Sanwo-Olu noted the remarkable success of the first phase of the program held in July, which encouraged the decision to launch this second phase within the same year.
“The Micro Enterprise Support Initiative is not just about financial aid; it is about establishing a foundation for self-sufficiency, stimulating economic growth, and unlocking the potential of our women,” he said.
“It ensures that every woman, regardless of her background, has access to the necessary tools and resources to transform her life, her community, and Lagos State as a whole.”
He urged the beneficiaries to embrace this opportunity fully, reminding them that their success would contribute to the overall success of Lagos State.
“As an administration, we remain committed to fostering initiatives that drive inclusivity, economic empowerment, and poverty alleviation. Together, we are creating a Lagos where everyone has an equal opportunity to thrive,” he concluded, commending Hon. Bolaji Dada, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, and her team for their relentless efforts in empowering thousands of residents.
