The Lagos State Government has firmly rejected claims that all current building permits have been revoked, following the dissemination of a misleading article by an online news source.
In a statement released by Olaoye Olusegun, the Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Building Control Agency, he clarified the situation, asserting that the authority to issue planning permits resides solely with the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA), under the jurisdiction of the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development.
Dr. Olajide Babatunde, the Special Adviser on eGIS and Urban Development, announced that it is essential for developers to revalidate their Letters of Authorization to begin construction, as many have failed to engage the necessary professionals after receiving their permits. This revalidation process is aimed at enabling the agency to conduct a thorough audit and verification of all professionals involved in construction projects within the state.
Furthermore, Dr. Babatunde indicated that any construction projects that have been left unattended for an extended period will require re-certification before work can resume, ensuring that the structural integrity of these buildings is maintained.
In addition, he mandated that no individuals should occupy any buildings that are still under construction, and all construction activities must conclude by 7 PM each day, with no work permitted on Sundays.
Property owners and developers are urged to revalidate their previously issued Letters of Authorization for construction. Dr. Babatunde emphasized the necessity for developers to engage all required professionals in the building process, including civil and structural engineers, as well as electrical and mechanical engineers, to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
