The House Committee on Media and Public Affairs recently clarified ongoing discussions around potential changes to Nigeria’s governing structure.
Committee Chairman Hon. Akin Rotimi emphasized that any amendments must go through the proper legal process. In a statement, he outlined the three routes for proposing revisions: bills introduced by lawmakers, memos submitted to the review committee, or executive bills.
Regarding one citizen’s memo advocating a return to regional system, Hon. Rotimi stated it has not yet entered the formal process. Contrary to some reports, the House has taken no position on the specific proposal.
However, Hon. Rotimi stressed the House’s commitment to an open and inclusive review. He explained the committee seeks to understand all perspectives so any new policies truly reflect the people’s collective will.
The Chairman also reassured the public discussion remains in early stages. Proper guidelines will be followed to examine complex issues from all sides. The goal is a transparent discussion that moves Nigeria forward in a way all citizens can support.
