The award received by the special education school in Guernsey for its incorporation of children’s rights into its curriculum is a testament to the school’s commitment to nurturing a holistic learning environment that respects and upholds the fundamental rights of every child.
By embedding children’s rights principles such as non-discrimination, participation, and best interests into its curriculum, the school is not only fulfilling its legal obligations under international conventions but also fostering a culture of inclusivity and respect.
This recognition serves as a model for other educational institutions to follow, showcasing the positive impact of prioritizing children’s rights in shaping a well-rounded educational experience.
By empowering students to understand and advocate for their rights, the school is equipping them with essential life skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom.

“The gold award is particularly important to us at Le Rondin School so that children with disabilities are able to understand what rights they have.
The children learn about rights, and they teach other people about rights, giving them an awareness of what adults as duty bearers should be doing for them.”
The award signifies the school has fully integrated the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child into its curriculum and ethos.
A group of students at Le Rondin created a video to showcase what they had learnt which was presented in an award assembly for parents and the wider school community.
The students arrived at the award assembly adorned in vibrant face paint and adorned with golden crowns, symbolizing a zest for celebration and recognition of their achievements.
This display of creativity and jubilation reflects the importance of acknowledging and honoring accomplishments in academic settings. By embracing such expressions of joy and pride, students not only enhance the festive atmosphere of the event but also reinforce the significance of hard work and dedication in achieving success.
The colorful face paint and regal crowns serve as visual representations of the students’ individuality and sense of achievement, highlighting the diversity of talents and accomplishments present within the student body.
This visual spectacle not only adds to the excitement of the award assembly but also serves as a powerful reminder of the collective efforts and achievements of the entire student community.
According to Unicef: “Rights Respecting is the highest level of the award and is granted to schools that have fully embedded the principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child into their ethos and curriculum.”
All schools in Guernsey have received a Rights Respecting School Award, and gold is the highest level.
