The Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Council has demonstrated a significant commitment to community development by empowering local traders and completing major infrastructure projects. The council, led by Chairman Prince Usman Akanbi Hamzat, has distributed 12.5 million naira to 250 petty traders and completed 54 road projects over the past three years.

At a recent media briefing, Prince Usman Akanbi Hamzat highlighted the achievements of his administration, focusing on infrastructure, economic empowerment, and social welfare. These efforts reflect the council’s dedication to improving the lives of residents and enhancing the local economy.

In the realm of infrastructure, the council has embarked on 81 major projects since taking office, averaging approximately two projects per month. Out of these, 54 road projects have been completed, with an additional 16 ongoing. This accomplishment marks a record for the highest number of road projects completed by any administration in Ifako-Ijaiye.

The improved road network is expected to enhance connectivity and facilitate economic activities within the local government area. By easing transportation, the road projects aim to improve access to markets, schools, and healthcare facilities, thus contributing to the overall development of the community.

In addition to infrastructure, the Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Council has focused on economic empowerment initiatives. The distribution of 12.5 million naira to 250 petty traders is part of a broader effort to support small businesses and stimulate economic growth. This initiative provides financial assistance to traders, helping them expand their businesses and improve their livelihoods.

Furthermore, the council has trained 800 women in business management and financial literacy. This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 5, which focuses on achieving gender equality and empowering women and girls. By equipping women with essential skills, the council is promoting economic independence and gender equality within the community.

The administration has also made significant strides in healthcare and social welfare. Over the past 24 months, the council has reached 7,639 residents through its free health program, averaging 300 beneficiaries per month. This program aims to provide essential healthcare services to residents, particularly those who may not have access to quality medical care.

In environmental health services, the council has undertaken regular desilting of drainages, disinfestation, and decontamination of public spaces, including primary healthcare centers and markets. These efforts are crucial in maintaining a clean and healthy environment, preventing disease outbreaks, and promoting public health.

Recognizing the importance of partnerships, the administration has collaborated with various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to accelerate development and promote entrepreneurship. These partnerships have facilitated technical exchanges and skill development opportunities for residents, further contributing to the community’s growth.

Notable partners include Stallion Auto Keke Ltd, Microsoft, Adara Foundation, Tech4Dev, YouLead Africa, and the German Corporation (GIZ). Through these collaborations, the council has empowered over 4,500 residents with startup funds and tools, supporting their journey toward economic self-sufficiency.

Education has also been a key focus of the administration. The renovation of Bishop Oluwole Memorial Primary School and the provision of new furniture and arts and crafts materials are part of the council’s efforts to improve the quality of education. Additionally, the distribution of free higher education exercise books and training for public school teachers demonstrate the council’s commitment to supporting education in Ifako-Ijaiye.

The achievements of the Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Council under Prince Usman Akanbi Hamzat’s leadership have earned widespread recognition and praise. In 2023, the chairman received a national award for being the Best Council Chairman in Nigeria for Empowerment, highlighting the impact of his administration’s initiatives.

By prioritizing infrastructure, economic empowerment, healthcare, and education, the council is setting a positive example for local governance and community development. These efforts not only improve the quality of life for residents but also lay the foundation for a prosperous and sustainable future for Ifako-Ijaiye.
