Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has asserted that he is fully capable of making his own political decisions without external pressure, dismissing rumors of a 2027 presidential ambition as baseless.
Speaking at an event held at Fashola Farm in Oyo on Friday night, Makinde emphasized his independence, stating that he alone would set his political agenda.
“If I have any ambitions, I will declare them myself. Nobody can push my agenda,” he said, countering speculation.
Reflecting on his political journey, Makinde highlighted the people of Oyo State as the key to his success, noting that he became governor without the backing of any political godfathers or major sponsors.
“In 2019, Oyo State people made the decision. We had no godfather, no sponsor. The people gave this opportunity to someone outside the usual circles.”
He also addressed his previous political setbacks, including two failed bids for the Senate, before securing the governorship.
Despite lacking prior political experience, he earned the people’s trust by presenting a detailed plan, the Road Map to Accelerated Development of Oyo State, 2019-2023, and delivering on his promises.
Makinde further warned against the risks of Nigeria becoming a one-party state, stressing the importance of a multi-party system to offer diverse leadership opportunities.
“Nigeria must not slide into a one-party state so that others can showcase their talents,” he said, reaffirming his commitment to political competition and diversity.
