Tragedy struck in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, when Femi Apatanku, a middle-aged man and the only son of his parents from Ilesha, committed suicide by jumping into the Osun River at Gbodofon Bridge.

The incident occurred around 10:30 AM, prompting residents and emergency services to rush to the scene in an attempt to prevent the tragedy, but they arrived too late.

Eyewitnesses reported that Apatanku had expressed despair over economic difficulties and had mentioned being assaulted by a group of individuals prior to his decision to end his life.

Despite efforts by fire services and onlookers, he proceeded with the tragic act.

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) confirmed the incident, noting ongoing efforts to recover Apatanku’s body from the river.

Investigations are ongoing to understand the full circumstances leading to this heartbreaking event in Osogbo.
